SO, YOU WANT TO JOIN OUR GROUP?
Here is some additional information:
The group has been around since 1995. Originally composed of 16 singers, we've expanded over time to as many as 23. Several charter members are still with us! We expect a high level of dedication to not only learning our music (memorized) but performing our music. You'll find us to be a very amicable and fun-loving group but also a focused group on our mission and message. Excellence in singing is a top priority. While we do sing some barbershop-style music and arrangements, we do not consider ourselves to be a barbershop group or chorus. Our music is varying in style and origin from hymns to spirituals in four-part (or more) harmony.
Joining the group is through an audition process, not simply a show-up-and-you're-in type of group. You would typically visit several of our regular monthly rehearsals as a guest and then be auditioned by our director after one of these. The audition is not a formal one where you have to come in with a prepared piece. The director will listen to your voice quality and check your range with scales and other vocal exercises. Other members also listen to you as you sit with them in your part section during rehearsal and sing with us. A formal application will be emailed to you at some point in the process if you continue to be interested in pursuing membership. After passing your audition and the director getting opinions from other members who heard you sing, a decision is made to offer you a membership slot, or not.
Music Learning Expectations
We have more than 25 songs in our active repertoire. Each new member has had to figure out how to tackle the big learning task. While there is no specific time limit for having them memorized, we do expect that you will be up to speed as soon as possible.
Rehearsals take place once per month on the 4th Thursday at Hillyer Memorial Christian Church in the choir room, unless otherwise notified. Occasionally, the church has other choir functions that need that room, in which case we rehearse in the main sanctuary. In addition, we rehearse before each scheduled singing commitment. You are encouraged to come to these commitments even if you are not ready to be "on the risers." You will learn from the rehearsing and perhaps a little by osmosis during the "live sing!" Also, you will hear which songs we are singing most frequently and can start by learning them. In recent months, when singers on a particular part were scarce, a singer sang with us holding his music. No one expects you to learn music "overnight" but we would like to see evidence of work on your part so that we know you'll soon help us bring His message to our listeners.
